Two terrifying tales featuring dangerous destinations.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Nightfall is the title of a radio drama series produced and aired by CBC Radio (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) from July 1980 to June 1983. While primarily a supernatural/horror series, Nightfall featured some episodes in other genres, such as science fiction, mystery, fantasy, and human drama. One episode was even adapted from a folk song by Stan Rogers. Some of Nightfall's episodes were so terrifying that the CBC registered numerous complaints and some affiliate stations dropped it. Despite this, the series went on to become one of the most popular shows in CBC Radio history, running 100 episodes that featured a mix of original tales and adaptations of both classic and obscure short stories.

Humphrey Bogart (December 25, 1899 – January 14, 1957) was an American screen actor who, with performances in films during the 1940s such as The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, and The Big Sleep, became widely regarded as a cultural icon.  In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Bogart as the greatest male star in the history of American cinema.

Bogart's breakthrough as a leading man came in 1941, with High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon. The next year, his performance in Casablanca raised him to the peak of his profession and, at the same time, cemented his trademark film persona, that of the hard-boiled cynic who ultimately shows his noble side. During a film career of almost 30 years, he appeared in 75 feature films.

Ken Scholes grew up in a trailer outside a smallish logging town not far from the base of Mount Rainier in the Pacific Northwest.  Baptized into Story at a young age, he fed himself on Speed Racer, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and Marine Boy sprinkled with a generous dose of dinosaur picture books.  When he was thirteen, he read Bradbury's essay "How to Keep and Feed a Muse" and knew he had to be a writer. When he was fourteen, he started writing stories of his own and by fifteen, he had started his own Rejection Slip Collection.

After a long break away from writing, Ken returned to it after logging time as a sailor, soldier, preacher, musician, label gun repairman, retail manager and nonprofit director. He sold his first story to Talebones Magazine in 2000 and won the Writers of the Future contest in 2004. His quirky, offbeat fiction continues to show up in various magazines and anthologies like Polyphony 6, Weird Tales and Clarkesworld Magazine.

In 2006, his short story "Of Metal Men and Scarlet Thread and Dancing with the Sunrise" appeared in the August issue of Realms of Fantasy. Later that year, inspired and taunted by his friends and family to finally write a novel, Ken extended that story and Lamentation was born. Lamentation is the first in a five book series from Tor Books called The Psalms of Isaak.  He has since also written CanticleAntiphon, and Requiem in that series.

Ken lives near Portland, Oregon, with his amazing wonder-wife Jen West Scholes and their twin daughters: Elizabeth and Rachel.  If you'd like to know more about Ken, you can  contact him through his website.

Journey #104 - Shadow of a Doubt - based on an Alfred Hitchcock film (presented by Screen Guild Theater)

Young Charlotte, or "Charlie", is happy to have her namesake uncle come for a visit until he starts acting suspicious.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Alfred Hitchcock was born on August 13, 1899, and later became an iconic English and American film director and producer. Often nicknamed "The Master of Suspense", he pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. Over a career spanning more than half a century, Hitchcock fashioned for himself a distinctive and recognizable directorial style.  Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades. Often regarded as the greatest British filmmaker, he came first in a 2007 poll of film critics in Britain's Daily Telegraph, which said: "Unquestionably the greatest filmmaker to emerge from these islands, Hitchcock did more than any director to shape modern cinema, which would be utterly different without him. His flair was for narrative, cruelly withholding crucial information (from his characters and from us) and engaging the emotions of the audience like no one else."

Journey #103 - Journey Into Space: Operation Luna 12 of 12 (presented by BBC)

As the crew of Luna prepares to be guided back to their own time, they begin to wonder about the nature of time, and whether they will even remember their experience.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Journey Into Space was a BBC Radio science fiction program written by Charles Chilton.  Originally, four series were produced (the fourth being a remake of the first).  Chilton went on to write three best-selling novels and several comic strip stories, based upon the radio series.

Created in 1953, the first series was simply known as Journey Into Space, with the subtitle A Tale of the Future added by the Radio Times, but within the BBC it became known as Journey to the Moon. The series was set in 1965 (the year in which Chilton believed humans would first walk on the Moon), and was first broadcast in 1953–1954 on the BBC Light Programme.

In 1958, Journey to the Moon was re-recorded for the BBC Transcription Services (retitled as Operation Luna), because the original recordings had been erased. The first four episodes of the original series were omitted, and episodes 12 and 13 were merged into a single episode.

Journey #91 - The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (presented by NBC Short Story)

The residents of an idyllic small town gather once a year to take part in the lottery.

Guest Hosts: Big Anklevich and Rish Outfield of Dunesteef.com

Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, and Ray Bradbury. The series premiered February 21, 1951 on NBC and ran in three different incarnations until May 30, 1952.

Ray Bradbury is the world’s greatest science fiction writer. Some may argue, including Ray himself, that he writes fantasy rather than science fiction. He once said that Fahrenheit 451 was his only true science fiction work. His stories may tells us very little about science, but a great deal about the netherworld of imagination buried deep within all of us. In addition to over 1000 short stories, several novels and a handful of plays; Ray Bradbury has written poetry and scenarios. He adapted the novel Moby Dick for the movies, and has seen several of his own stroies made into motion pictures, as well as television radio shows. His writing has appeared in nearly every American magazine publishing quality fiction, and in over 100 anthologies of short stories.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 and became an American author, poet, editor and literary critic. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as the genre of science fiction.  He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.  Poe died in 1849,  in Baltimore, under mysterious circumstances, but he left us with a legacy of tales of wonder and woe, the marvelous and the macarbe.

Big Anklevich and Rish Outfield are the editors and hosts of the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine, where they present wonderful full cast stories of speculative fiction.  Their banter could not be contained within a single podcast, and thus it has spilled out into their side conversation podcast That Gets My Goat.  They are both writers themselves, and often feature their own work.

Bria Burton writes speculative and other fiction in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her publications are listed on her website: www.briaburton.com.  Three dreams came true for her in 2013. She quit her job in order to write full time, a dream since childhood. She was selected as one of the winners in the Edgar Allen Poe writing contest, a dream since last year when her submission, much like Kraykor in the story, sailed into a deep void in space never to be seen or heard from again. Over at the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine, she was selected as one of the winners in the Triple Word Score Contest, fulfilling a dream since 2010 to have a story air on the podcast. She thanks her hubby and her parents for always encouraging her to follow her dreams.
