Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 and became an American author, poet, editor and literary critic. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as the genre of science fiction.  He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.  Poe died in 1849,  in Baltimore, under mysterious circumstances, but he left us with a legacy of tales of wonder and woe, the marvelous and the macabre.

Dave Robison has narrated numerous books and stories for fiction podcasts and audiobooks (including several tales of Poe for "Journey Into..."!). In addition to his vocal work, Dave is the creator of ARCHIVOS, an online story development and presentation tool that provides writers with a completely unique way of exploring their stories, as well as the host of the Archivos Podcast Network (currently on hiatus). He also designs board games and is an avid gardener, cook, and role-playing gamer.

Journey #83 - The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

Jim and Della have great love for each other but very little money.  How can they hope to get each other a gift for Christmas?

To download, right-click here and then click Save

William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. He wrote and published several stories through his life.  O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and clever twist endings.

However, Porter was found guilty of embezzlement in February 1898, sentenced to five years in prison. While in prison, as a licensed pharmacist, he worked in the prison hospital as the night druggist. Porter was given his own room in the hospital wing, and there is no record that he actually spent time in the cell block of the prison. He had fourteen stories published under various pseudonyms while he was in prison, but was becoming best known as "O. Henry". A friend of his in New Orleans would forward his stories to publishers, so they had no idea the writer was imprisoned.

Josh Roseman (not the trombonist; the other one) lives in Georgia (the state, not the country). His writing has appeared in Asimov’s, Escape Pod, and the Crossed Genres anthology Fat Girl in a Strange Land. His fiction has been reprinted by the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine and StarShipSofa, and his voice has been heard on two Escape Artists and all four District of Wonders podcasts. He is a 2013 graduate of the Taos Toolbox writing workshop. When not writing, he mostly complains about the fact that he’s not writing.

Journey #74 - Outgoing Transmissions by Rish Outfield

The following are transmissions intercepted by a Bothan surveillance vessel in the weeks leading up to the historic Battle of Yavin.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

For five ignominious years now, Rish Outfield has been co-host of the Dunesteef Audio Fiction Magazine, which occasionally still produces full cast short stories and lengthy banter with Big Anklevich. Lately, Rish has lent his voice to many audio dramas, lent his stories to many podcasts, and lent his soul to the horned black Beast himself. He has tried his hand at narrating audiobooks, some of which are available at Audible.com, and has tried his voice at singing karaoke songs, some of which are available in your most upsetting fever dreams. The Force is with him . . . but he is not a Jedi yet.

Keith Rainey, who narrated this story, is a senior system controls engineer who lives in Oregon with his family.  His midi-chlorian count is pretty high, but it remains uncertain whether he can bring balance to the Force.

After its original appearance in IGMS in 2005, "Respite" was re-printed in the IGMS anthology in 2008, and went on to inspire Bryan Thomas Schmidt to create the "Beyond the Sun" Anthology that will be released this summer, filled with stories of other worlds by Robert Heinlein, Nancy Kress, Mike Resnick, and more.

Journey #61 - The Boy Who Could Bend and Fall by Ken Scholes

Focus Jones, a.k.a Slinky Boy, has an interesting way of escaping his reality.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Ken Scholes grew up in a trailer outside a smallish logging town not far from the base of Mount Rainier in the Pacific Northwest.  Baptized into Story at a young age, he fed himself on Speed Racer, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and Marine Boy sprinkled with a generous dose of dinosaur picture books.  When he was thirteen, he read Bradbury's essay "How to Keep and Feed a Muse" and knew he had to be a writer. When he was fourteen, he started writing stories of his own and by fifteen, he had started his own Rejection Slip Collection.
After a long break away from writing, Ken returned to it after logging time as a sailor, soldier, preacher, musician, label gun repairman, retail manager and nonprofit director. He sold his first story to Talebones Magazine in 2000 and won the Writers of the Future contest in 2004. His quirky, offbeat fiction continues to show up in various magazines and anthologies like Polyphony 6, Weird Tales and Clarkesworld Magazine.

In 2006, his short story "Of Metal Men and Scarlet Thread and Dancing with the Sunrise" appeared in the August issue of Realms of Fantasy. Later that year, inspired and taunted by his friends and family to finally write a novel, Ken extended that story aand Lamentation was born. Lamentation is the first in a five book series from Tor Books called The Psalms of Isaak.  He has since also written Canticle, Antiphon, and Requiem in that series.
Ken lives near Portland, Oregon, with his amazing wonder-wife Jen West Scholes and their twin daughters: Elizabeth and Rachel.  If you'd like to know more about Ken, you can  contact him through his website or through his blog.
