Journey #158 - Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut and The Haunted Spacesuit by Arthur C. Clarke (as presented by Mind Webs)

Journey into a society where everyone is equal (or else) and into the loneliness of space.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Mind Webs was a 1970's series out of WHA Radio in Wisconsin that featured weekly semi-dramatized readings of science fiction short stories performed by Michael Hansen. It aired stroies by some of the genre's best writers like Norman Spinrad, Arthur C. Clarke, Gordon R. Dickson, and Ray  Bradbury. Many of the readings were enhanced by music, periodic sound cues, and the occasional character voice, however they are not completely dramatized.

Journey #156 - Honeymoon in Hell by Frediric Brown (presented by X-Minus One)

Captain Ray Carmody and Anya Borisovna get married and rocket to the moon to save the human race.

To download, right-click here and then click Save

Fredric Brown (October 29, 1906 – March 11, 1972) was an American science fiction and mystery writer. He was born in Cincinnati.  He is perhaps best known for his use of humor and for his mastery of the "short short" form—stories of 1 to 3 pages, often with ingenious plotting devices and surprise endings. Humor and a somewhat postmodern outlook carried over into his novels as well.
The famous pulp writer Mickey Spillane called Brown "my favorite writer of all time".  Science fiction and fantasy writer Neil Gaiman has also expressed fondness for Brown's work, having his novel Here Comes A Candle narrated by the character Rose Walker in the collection The Kindly Ones of The Sandman.  Brown also had the honor of being one of three dedicatees of Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.

X Minus One was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC.  Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1950–51), the first 15 episodes of X Minus One were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations by NBC staff writers, including Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts, of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon, along with some original scripts by Kinoy and Lefferts.

Delusion #70 - Leigh Brackett's Star Wars Sequel, part 2

Rish Outfield completes his reading from the first draft screenplay of the Star Wars Sequel, written by Leigh Brackett in 1978, what would ultimately become THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.  Rish and Marshal also talk about the similarities and differences between this script and the finished movie, and geek out talking about the greatest sequel ever made.

Fact Check: Rish refers to Iago as the villain of The Tempest.  Iago was the villain in Othello--Caliban was the villain in The Tempest.

Tim Pratt typically writes about love, monsters, secret societies, romance, trickster gods, terrible decisions, punching, metaphysics, nostalgia, entropy, magical anthropophagous cars, bridges to implausible realities, libraries, demonic thrift shops, cryptids, and breakfast foods, among other subjects. Most of his stories involve magic, or science, or science that could be mistaken for magic.

And he's pretty good at this stuff. He won a Hugo Award for one of his stories a while back, and his short work has been nominated for World Fantasy, Nebula, Sturgeon, and Stoker Awards, too. His stories have appeared in the Best American Short Stories (Fancy!), the Year's Best Fantasy, The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, the Mammoth Book of Best New Horror – you get the idea.

Go to timpratt.org to learn about more about his books and collections, or like I mentioned earlier, head over to patreon.com/timpratt to read more of his stories.  Recently, in light of the Coronavirus and all the quarantines, Tim made the first year of stories on Patreon free for anyone to read.  That's very cool, but you might as well toss him a buck a month to read all of his stories.

Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as the genre of science fiction.  He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.  Poe died in 1849,  in Baltimore, under mysterious circumstances, but he left us with a legacy of tales of wonder and woe, the marvelous and the macabre.

Dave Robison has narrated numerous books and stories for fiction podcasts and audiobooks (including several tales of Poe for "Journey Into..."!). In addition to his vocal work, Dave is the creator of ARCHIVOS, an online story development and presentation tool that provides writers with a completely unique way of exploring their stories, as well as the host of the Archivos Podcast Network (currently on hiatus). He also designs board games and is an avid gardener, cook, and role-playing gamer.
